UCI Health Affairs is pleased to announce Professor Eric Vilain, MD, PhD, has been appointed as Associate Vice Chancellor for Scientific Affairs for Health Affairs.

Dr. Vilain is currently professor in the School of Medicine Department of Pediatrics, Associate Vice Chancellor for Clinical and Translational Research, and Director of the Institute for Clinical Translational Sciences (ICTS).

In his expanded role, effective June 15, Professor Vilain will be a member of Vice Chancellor Steve Goldstein’s cabinet with responsibility for accelerating health research across the discover, teach and heal mission by fostering interdisciplinary innovation and supporting the aspirations of the schools, centers and institutes of the Susan & Henry Samueli College of Health Sciences, and UCI Health. Early areas of focus will be space planning, including occupancy of Falling Leaves Medical Innovation Building, convening meetings of research leaders across Health Affairs to facilitate discussions of shared needs and opportunities, and facilitation of collaborations with public and private entities.

Dr. Vilain came to UCI in 2022, bringing with him over 20 years of experience overseeing large collaborative research and innovation projects, leading a clinical division, chairing a medical school department, spearheading global healthcare initiatives, and a passion for data-driven transformative research.

Professor Vilain will continue to lead the ICTS, enhancing the impact of the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) that provides trainees and faculty with supplemental and seed grants, and support and guidance in the application for federal funding and performance of clinical and translational studies.

UCI Health Affairs is fortunate that Professor Vilain is willing to expand his administrative duties as we look forward to his leadership and vision for this new role.
